WHAT KIND OF MATERIALS DO YOU USE?
The kind of materials we use, as well as their permanency, depends on your goals and space. In general, here's what you can expect:

  • BLACKBOARD MURALS - We will apply chalkboard paint, which can be custom-tinted to a wide range of colors. Then, we will use chalk pastels to create the artwork. We suggest that if you want a more permanent mural, you allow us to use either chalk paint markers or latex paint and brushes. In our experience thus far, spray-sealers used to protect chalk work only work for smaller projects and are not ideal for larger murals.

  • INTERIOR PAVEMENT MURALS  - Depending on the ground surface, we will either use custom-built, primed large canvases or wooden boards. Both will be di-cut, thoroughly primed, and visually matched to its surroundings. For 3D pieces, this technique still works! The illusion still works, and with this method, you can even keep the mural around for future events. We will use a combination of latex and acrylic paints with chalk.

  • EXTERIOR PAVEMENT MURALS - If you have a ground surface that does not easily welcome chalk, such as cobblestone or soil/grass, we can utilize the portable surfaces described above. If your ground is begging to be colored in chalk, we will simply give the surface a thorough sweeping and get started with a combination of chalk pastels, homemade sidewalk chalk, and charcoal. Occasionally we will prime large surfaces with highly diluted tempera paints, but only with your permission. The tempera paint encourages a more vibrant appearance from the chalk, and the mural will be overall more durable to weather and foot-traffic.

WHAT IF IT RAINS?
If you hear of a weather-controlling machine, please let us know immediately! Until then, we do our very best to work around and with variable weather. We watch the forecasts like hawks, weeks leading to your event. If it is looking too dicey, we have three options: (1) move the mural indoors (2) rent a very large event tent with walls that seal to the ground or (3) reschedule. In your paperwork agreement with us, we will go into all of these with detail. It has to be fairly severe rain to force us to reschedule -- usually we can cover the artwork with tarps and duct tape to protect it through a moderate to heavy rain.

DOES CHALK ART HAVE TO BE OUTSIDE?
Nope! Much of our work can be done on custom-built portable surfaces, that can work on any hard floor or even carpet.

HOW LONG WILL AN OUTDOOR PIECE LAST?
Because every mural site is so unique, each chalk piece will have different durability. Factors such as foot traffic, weather, and vehicle and bike traffic all play a role. But to give you a rough idea, we've found that a chalk piece drawn onto standard sidewalk cement will last 5-10 days in great condition if left untouched in gorgeous weather. We've seen pieces last as long as one month or more at 75% quality in climates such as San Diego and Arizona. We will adjust our materials and methods to accomplish whatever goals you may have for your campaign or event.

WHAT IF I LOVE IT SO MUCH, I WANT IT TO BE PERMANENT?  CAN IT BE SEALED?
If you want to invest in a permanent ground mural, we will paint it instead of chalk it. We will then apply a durable clear sealer on top of the painted mural. This can work in outdoor or indoor environments.

WHAT ABOUT PERMITS FOR PUBLIC SPACES?
Every city has different requirements for permits. Some cities do not require them at all, while other cities require renderings and fees submitted before the event. Regardless of your area, we are used to navigating these civic mazes and committed to finding answers so that we can color your world!

DO YOU WASH THE CHALK OFF WHEN THE EVENT IS DONE?
Cleaning prices are not included in anything listed on the website. If you need the chalk mural power-washed off of the pavement immediately after an event, we will hire a power-washing service local to your area and include it in your final invoice. We do not currently own our own power-washing equipment. Most of our clients prefer to let the chalk gradually erode away on its own, as some consider it to be an appeal of the art form.
